Get a Doberman. Meets all your requirements.

First you should go to an animal shelter. Muts tend to have a lot fewer physical problems than "pure bed" animals. Pure breeds suffer from lots of in breeding. I had a friend that spent $4,000 for a Dog and then another $6,000 on medical bills (she did get a refund from the breeder, but still). And the dog was as dumb as a doornail.

When you visit the shelter, make sure you get a history of hte animal. Being a good person and resucing an animal is fine and dandy but you have kids so you don't want a dog that was been abused. They might not show it, but that can act out later, and that would be a tragity.

Best thing, many shelters, the cost covers all the shots and paper work you need so you are set when you get home!

But if you do want a dog that is pure bred here is a book
and also an unline quiz ENJOY!

I just want to add I took that test myself, and I jsut fell in love with a
SCHIPPERKE

Some people prefer Dachshunds (weeny dogs), but they can be snippy towards kids. I think your best bet, would be a Jack Russel Terrier, Beagle, Miniature Schnauzer, Pug, Silky Terrier, Toy Fox Terrier, or Yorkshire Terrier. I would also check the local animal shelter, if having a pure breed isn't a priority. I have often heard that mixed breeds make better pets and that is where I get most of my dogs. Contrary to popular belief, you can also find many pure breed dogs at your shelter. Whatever you do, make sure you do your research and talk to your local vet. There are many breeds that offer many different traits.

If you're talking cooking, depends on how many kids you have, and how you're preparing them. Boiling? Frying? Baking? Choose a dog that isn't too big so the flavor of the dog and the kids doesn't clash.

Probably want to take into account the type of wine you're serving, too...

I'd say rottweiler, but they get pretty big.
However they are good with kids, and they may even get attached to them and protect them. There is a lot of bad propaganda about them but i had one when i was a kid and she was the sweetest thing ever!
Smaller dogs are labs, retrievers, basenjis (however they are stubborn. they don't bark but the make A LOT of noise.)
Or you could get some terriers like a Jack Russell, or a Rat Terrier, or a Pinscher (not to be confused with a Dobermann Pinscher.)

The best dog with kids is a Lab and they weigh about 70 pounds. I have owned two and they are great with kids. Small dogs are not usually good with kids.

Boston Terrier is pretty small. Check your local animal shelter and test the dog around your kids. Every dog is different so that is probably the best way to tell.

Great Danes are known to be very protective and tolerant of children, but they are quite big. Golden Retreivers are probably the next best dog for kids. They can be trusted alone with small children, and sometimes are bred to work with the disabled. I have one of those and she is extremely gentle-smart-and playful.

Get a Golden Retreiver or a Lab.
Be warned that these dogs require a lot of exercise, however.
