The Audubon Zoo and the Aquarium of the Americas are both open. The Aquarium has an IMAX theater.

You can also take a river boat cruise between the Zoo and the Aquarium, if you're up for touring both in one day:

The Louisiana Children's Museum has reopened

Blaire Kern's Mardi Gras World has tours daily; you can tour the workshop where most of the Mardi Gras floats are made. The advertising makes it look a bit hokey, but it really is worth the trip. Plus, you get to ride the ferry across the Mississippi.

The Presbytere, which is in Jackson Square, also has a permanent Mardi Gras exhibit.

I have no idea how the hurricanes affected the swamp tours, but if there are still tours going on, they're a lot of fun, too. Honey Island Swamp was my personal favorite.

October is nice. New Orleans is decent, but never venture off alone, keep in groups and stay within the quarter. The garden district is very nice, has a trolley you can ride, the Riverboat, the carriage rides by Jackson square, the old church, the french market. Cafe Du Monde is nice for a break. The aquarium, walking along the river is a nice way to pass time. Enjoy yourself.

the french quarter is not where the current crime spree is taking place. tourists are too important for the police to allow that. take your child to the zoo, it is open and is great. go to the aquarium, it is open and is wonderful. take a ride in one of the mule-drawn carriages in front of the cathedral at jackson square. that is always fun. contact the new orleans convention and visitors bureau for other ideas. we have done all that i have listed and they were thoroughly enjoyed by my daughters.

Not a real kid friendly place. And keep her out of the Quarter, it's way too grown up for me, and I'm 51. All of you stay out of Treme, very dangerous.
I guess the best kid things would be to ride the ferry across the Mississippi and visit the Mardi Gras float factory.

You're taking your kid to a place nicknamed... The Big Easy. Think before you book this trip. Isn't DisneyWorld, Cinderella and Snow White more suitable for your daughter?

If i were you, I would never subject my children to that S H I T hole. Why would you drag your children to a place that specializes in, Alchoholism, Gambling, Sexual debaucheries and Voo Doo. Not to mention Mayor Ray "Willy Wonka" Nagan

N.O. is not a place for kids. It is quickly becoming a crime city with numerous murders.
