Nitrous Oxide is laughing gas. It will not "knock" him out, it will only make him more relaxed and willing to cooperate with the doctor.

If you do take him to a pedo dentist, he might not even need Nitrous Oxide. Pedo dentist love to work with children, this is why they are in this field, so they might have a better way to work with children and turn their attention elsewhere then what the "dentist" is doing.

On your behalf though, don't ever mention "Going to the dentist won't hurt!". Your son probably never even knew that the dentist "could" hurt, so if you say this they will think that the dentist is going to hurt them.

I am a dental assistant in training, and one of my teachers is a retired pediatric dentist. I know just from going to the dentist myself and working with her that she has a nicer personality and better aproach to working with children!

I think a lesson that all parents have to learn with children is patience, so obviously a dentist will have to be patient :O)

Well it's not particular good for him, I have changed dentists for this reason and because there are some out there that will not let you go back with your child, which I do not agree with, I understand why they do that but I want to be around to stick up for my child if the dentist is going to be mean or rough.I would get a diff dentist your child may feel safer with another one, don't let this rude man bully you into doing something your not comfortable doing to your child. I have 4 little ones and 2 of them are not comfortable either so i found one they were comfortable with without the drugs

A pediatric dentist performs all the same procedures as a regular dentist. The nice part is that the equipment is usually smaller and they are more sensitive to nervous children. The gas won't hurt your child at all--they have been using it for decades.

Find another dentist, because the main point for your kid at that age is to break the fear of one and learn how to open his mouth. They're not gonna do anything more then clean his teeth at this age anyways. So find somebody who has patience or you'll traumatize your son more then necessary.

I had nitrous oxide when i was about his age and it made me really sick and it was a horrible experience.. I still remember it 20 yrs later. You need to see a dentist who is patient and will build trust with your son. Talk to other moms or your sons doctor they can probably recommend someone who is good with children..

You need to take your child to a dentist that specializes with children that age. I had the same thing happen to me, the place I took my son was suppose to specialize in children, but they ended up being a bunch of pricks. I stormed out of there and a week later I found a place that catered to my child. They are out there you just have to look for them.

No, it won't knock him out, they mix it with oxygen.
Maybe try another dentist with a little more patience and sensitivity.
