Some gay people who are afraid of society try to hide their homosexuality. These are the "closet-gays" that just havent come out yet because of fear.

Openly gay people can be very noticeable:

Gay men tend to express feminine traits especially in the way they walk, sit (crossing their legs like a woman), position their hands in a "dainty" way.

They also seem to have more "style" (extremely nice hair, well-done nails, etc., extravagant clothing) than your average man

Some of them like to use a higher tone/pitch of voice to match a woman-like tone. Their expression may also seem very "womanly".

You may even find that gay men have a lot of women friends and this is for many reasons which may include:

1. They want to observe female expressions by watching women.

2. They can identify with the emotions and sentiments of women.

Some Gay/lesbian women tend to express masculine traits. They may cut their hair in a man's style, use a lower tone of voice, and dress like men.

personality changes, the way they talk, act, walk, differently than usually and if they look at the same sex as themselves then their gay but sometimes it's hard to keep quiet but some people do really well you just have to catch them in the act and for guys it's easier to tell because i had a classmate who seemed gay but would never admit it but everyone knew but he just deny it often he talked with a slight high pitched voice walked kinda funny waved his hands oddly sometimes plus he hung around girls a lot you would almost never see him with a group of guys but this is how i know someone is gay but don't use the same method twice because nine times out of ten the normal behavior for gay men or women changes all the time when all else fails just ask and try to be understanding not criticizing the other person or putting judgement on them because this is america 2006

Unless they are very obvious, you don't know and perhaps they want it that way given that most society hasn't come far enough yet to actually accept gays comfortably. If they want you to know they will probably tell you...if you just have to know? Ask, but be prepared to get a reaction from the person either good or bad.

Depends on the relationship you have with this person and how open you and them can actually be.

Well u kinda know by the way they act. If its a guy, he will use a lot of body language and he wil like put his hand on you like ur leg or ur shoulder. And if its a gay guy, he will be obsessed by his looks.

If they like to have sex with people of thier own gender exclusively. If a guy notices an outfit a woman is wearing more than her body, that is clue.

You don't always know... but there can be several indicators such as the "lisp", dress style, walking style, hair style, etc... in some cases it is obvious, other times it is not so clear.

Mostly in a few minutes after talking unless he or she is hiding, then it's really difficult. Get even harder to tell if they hiding also from themselves.
