If you take out the battery, your CMOS(BIOS) settings are set to the default values, you must restart to verify this.
I found out that all batteries are interchangeble(you can use a battery from any AMD compatible motherboard on any intel compatible motherboard and vice versa) I just thought of mentioning this in case you'd like to further your experiments

If I understood your question I had this ensue to me. some days in the previous it started doing what yours is doing I had by twist of fate spilled Coke on my computer table and a few ran down the front of my computer and have been given into my start up button. After it dried it became sticky. whilst i might turn it off it would circulate off, yet whilst i might come back and turn it back on the button might stick and does not launch. consequently it stayed off. After approximately 15 minutes the spring on the button might finally unstuck it and it would come on. The restore; I took the front conceal off and disassembled the “on” button. wiped clean it up genuine stable and now it quite works like a champ.

It sounds to me like you have a bad battery on the motherboard. Replace it with a new one. CompUSA should carry a replacement; and, they don't cost very much.
