It's a muscle spasm that can result from the way you sleep. You'd be amazed how problems with your back can cause pain, cramping in other parts of your body. I get those kinds of spasms once in awhile too. You may want to try a leg pillow. This will keep your back in a better sleeping position and may take care of those cramps.

They're called charley horses.
"This out-of-the-blue leg cramp is as intense as a kick from a palomino. "You'll be lying in bed or even asleep when you get this terrible knot-usually in the calf but sometimes in the thigh or the arch of your foot," says Steven Subotnick, D.P.M., a sports podiatrist in Hayward, California, and author of Sports and Exercise Injuries.

What causes a charley horse? It can be the result of sore muscles, a mineral deficiency or hormonal imbalance or even a process known as calcification, in which blood gets trapped in a muscle and hardens. No matter the cause, here's how to get fast relief.

Rub for relief. A little kneading may be all you need to pull in the reins on a charley horse. Always rub with the muscle, not across it. So for a charley horse in your calf, start behind the knee and rub toward the heel."

It is not a charlie horse your muscles are cramping up, from doing exercise and stuff like that, so you are probally lacking vitamines, try eating some bananas or other fruit, and before and after try stretching so that your muscles can release the toxins that cause you to cramp

Well, it might be what's called growing pains and it's a sign of deficiency of certain types of vitamins (don't know which sorry!).

My sister once woke up screaming in pain in her leg and my dad (an MD) told her to flex her toes towards her head. Every time I got such a pain, I did that and the pain went away immediately. Note that you actually have to stretch your toes and the front of your foot up towards your head with your muscles, not use your hands.

Hope it helps.

it certainly sounds like "charley horses", one thing you can do to prevent reoccurence is to take calcium supplements. Often the muscles in the legs especially will cramp because you are low in calcium. Another is lack of adequate potassium, so eat potassium rich foods as well, like canteloupe or raisins.

You may wish to go to the doctor and get a blood test done. There is something called 'Human Parvo Virus' where this happens. Good Luck!

You need to eat more potassium. Postassium helps to put oxygen to your muscles. I got this a while back. It hurts a lot! Try more potassium.
