Because it isn't only physical, but mental exhaustion. You're busy before you go, packing and planning. The actual travel part is exciting and worrisome at the same time. When you finally arrive, you have so much planned that you can't really take time to rest. You run from one exciting (or frustrating, if your vacations are anything like mine) adventure to another, seldom taking time to actually "vacate." Then you have to travel home, with all of the packing and worrying all over again. By the time you get home, all you want to do is drop your bags and go to sleep.

It depends on what kind of traveling YOU want to do. I take next Friday, Saturday, Sunday off. My friday starts at 0300 with newspaper delivery, have to be in the Alexandria,LA airport no later than 0530, plane leaves at 0600 for Houston, then I have lay over, be in Colorado Springs by 1100, should be out of the airport around 1130-1145, check out Ft Carson, stores LA does not have, check out the club scene, see Garden of Gods, AF academy, Seven Falls and need to be back in Alexandria by 170o
that sunday night. It will be short, exhausting, but I have seen something new in Colorado,
Been driving through the state in 1985 coming from NM going to ID.
It is very exhausting when you travel with little children. It will be only MYSELF! What a reward!!!

I don't know what kind of travel exhausted you, but never happens to me. I love to travel. Many 24 hours driving or bus. Once, a 38 hours train ride. By plane, 18 hours. I loved them all.

If you find it exhausting, I must assume you don't travel in a rear-wheel-drive American V-8 sedan. In a Ford Crown Victoria or such, traveling is a pleasure and one can cover a thousand miles in a day and arrive at one's destination relaxed and ready for action.

It's usually exhausting because you're away from home and want to be in your own bed and also if you switch time zones if just totally disrupts your sleeping pattern!

For the people who are driving because they have to focus for a really long time and for the passengers its because you are used to doing things instead of staying still or sleeping when you are supposed to be up doing something!

Because you are on the go all the time, and your body probably isn't used to that. Plus if you go to another place, your body may have to take some time to get used to that places climate. =)
