1 John does not refer to John the Baptist. All the books of the Bible listed John are written by the apostle John. The same with Revelations. John was just much much older then.

John was a disciple of Jesus, and I believe he was His best earthly friend. He was the only disciple to stay around during the crucifixion, and Jesus gave his mother to him for care. He was only a fisherman, but was evidently very intelligent, which comes from reading his books.
John's Gospel is a biography of Jesus. 1,2,and 3 John were letters he wrote to various people. Revelation was a book of prophecy regarding the return or Christ and the end times. John's writings were done when he was elderly.
John is said to have been boiled in oil and survived. He was then sent to the isle of Patmos, where he wrote Revelation. He was released and went back to his diocese of Ephesus before he died, the only apostle to die of natural causes.
