Unless you know why/how the pup died, be careful blaming the mother. Sometimes the pup dies from congenital weakness and then the mom mutilates them. Or it may be that she felt the pup was too weak to live. Sometimes she doesn't know where these screaming brats came from and equates them with prey and kills them.

The mom may be too young to know what to do, or she may not be a fit mother. If she is over two years and you're SURE she killed the pup, spay her now. Especially if she has ever done this before. I would never trust her again. If she is not yet two, I'd suspect that she doesn't have any concept what to do to raise puppies. Don't breed her again until she is over two and has strong adult hormones. You really should consult your vet to be sure the female is READY to be bred anyway.

I don't think salt on her food will do anything to correct this behavior. I'd remove the puppies and bottle feed if it was me.

All that said, I must give you the lecture: There are quite enough puppies (especially pit bull puppies) in this world. I'd recommend you spay her just on principle! MIllions die in animal control every year because people (like you) are breeding dogs and don't know what they are doing.

Robin D said it best -- there can be a number of reasons for a female dog to kill her own puppies, from inexperience or mental unfitness, to lethal congenital problems with the puppy that the mother can sense. The fact that she is a Pit Bull has *nothing* to do with her behavior. Any female dog is capable of this behavior, and it is not uncommon with young, inexperienced mothers.

I see no valid scientific reason why salt would prevent a mother dog from killing her puppies. In 20 years of breeding dogs, I have never heard of this.

I won't belabor the idea of spaying your dog, since Robin has already done it. But consider her words.

Not all do. We have have Boston Terrier mothers actually eat their puppies. I believe it sometimes may be if they are nervous or scared. I have seen it with my own dog too. She had them outside in a pen with two other hyper puppies with her and she bit thd head off one and may have ate others. It is sad, but some dogs do that. Can't tell you exactly why. She has had a litter since then by herself and you wouldn't even know she would treat a puppy so badly. She is the sweetest dog. I think it is the circumstances.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aULw5

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

This is the same reason that goes for hamsters and other small furry animals-
If the mother does not feel that the enviorement that her pups are in is safe then she kills them to prevent them from dying a worse death such as getting killed or starvation.

Bad genes...have this dog fixed right away and don't give the puppies back to the mother or you will find another one dead...you will have to hand feed these pups...spay this dog now!!

Many animals will eat their young,
I always heard it was the lack of something in their
diet. You can try raising the pups on a bottle...

It is not uncommon for parents to eat their young. Fish do it all the time, but I have never heard of this in dogs.

I agree with Robin and Loki. Take the puppies away from her and spay her.

I have never heard of a specific breed doing it, but I have heard they will sometimes do it to the runt or one that has been handled a lot.
