Do you know when this trend began and why? And the lawn gnomes appeared at the same time?
I'm doing some research on Garden decorations and just wondered what was the history behind those flamingos and gnomes....

The flamingos started in the 50's, well, just after WWII. After the war people started to buy homes and the big thing was to decorate your yard. The lantern jockeys were also a big hit then, and the little deer as well.
In the late 40's and into the 50's it was the style to have what was then called a " Florida room", ( sunporch ) and the theme carried over to the flamingos.
Pink and turqouise were the big colors of that era as well. Hope this helped!!

Flamingos on the lawn began back in the 1950s, and gnomes a lot more recently (the 1980s). With the advent of plastics these things bacame easier to produce, thus many people have them. There are hundreds of other lawn ornaments of this type (maybe thousands)

I guess when old ladies in Florida became bored with shuffle board and started decorating their kids yard with things they made in arts and crafts class "Lawn Clutter" for gifts at Christmas.((((Awe thanks Aunt Edna for the crochetted garden gnome...and the popcicle stick bird bathe.)))
