Mothers should not wear black - it looks like they are mourning the loss of their daughter to the wrong person.

However, if your sister approves, then there isn't much you can do. You can tell your mom, in a non-confrontational manner, why it's a bad idea; but they are all adults and you'll have to allow them to make their own decisions and mistakes.

Suprisingly enough, my bridesmaids wore dark red dresses and my mother wore a black dress, she did not wear it like she was mourning, it was very elegant and she matched it with pearls. It actually ended up looking really nice. She has a hard time finding formal wear as she is a breast cancer survivor who lost both breasts so when she put that dress on and said she like it and felt comfortable in it I was more than happy to have her wear it at my wedding. Tell your sister to keep her head up and not to let your mother's choice ruin her big day, i'm sure it will work out fine! There are pictures on my yahoo 360 page if it helps you to get a better idea of what my mom's dress was and what our bridesmaids had on. Good luck and enjoy your sister's wedding!

What do you want help with?

In the US is typically not considered in good taste to wear black, white, OR red to a wedding. Why would the bride choose red for her bridesmaids? What does the bride say about the black dress? Or does she just not care? And why are you concerned? You're not getting married.

Heck, these days, even Brides are wearing black now and then... Traditionally, the only ones in black should be Men of the wedding party, and the officiator.... are you trying to get her to match the bridesmaids, cause that isn't actually a good idea either... check out.... www.etiquettehell.com It's a website Devoted to Weddings No-No's... (and it's funny too)

Black is actually a traditional color for mother's to wear in Jewish weddings, so it's really not that unusual. My cousin is getting married tomorrow and the mother of the groom is wearing a black dress and and the mother of the bride is wearing black pants and a formal black and cream print jacket, and at another cousin's wedding the mother of the groom (from whom I learned about the Jewish tradition) wore a very formal black cocktail gown.
It's usually better for night and/or formal weddings though, no so much for a day time or garden affair. But really, as long as the bride is okay with it, it's fine. If the bride is REALLY against it, then she needs to sit down with her mother and respectfully request that her mother choose a different color, and be able to tell her WHY.
Good luck, and keep on supporting your sister!

There's nothing that says the mother's dress has to match the bridesmaids' dresses. If the groom's mother is also wearing black, the pictures will turn out nicely with all the bright colors

Probably too much of a problem if it's an evening wedding with dark bridesmaids dresses.

Anyway, better than my evil step-mother who had the hide to wear white to my wedding!

It's fine for her to wear black. My bridesmaid dresses were black, I told my mother in law and my mom to wear black also. It turned out good. Even my invitations were black sooooooooo riskay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No, it was a very expensive, fancy wedding and everyone loved it. Times are a changin!

Black dress is unnapropiate for a wedding, She is not going to a funeral or a new years eve coctail party. The least that she can do is to dress appropriately to her own daugher's wedding.

Good luck

While that might be pretty..........

Have your sister sit Mom down & tell her she'd rather that Mom wear a different color dress. But don't be surprised if Mom balks. And you can't force Mom. Your sis may have to grit her teeth on this one.
Maybe a shopping trip together?
