First the following things have to happen
Golf club - Grooves must be clean
Golf Ball - designed for control not distance
Lie - You cannot have a grassy lie - grass between ball and club
Shot - works best with full swing
A proper golf stroke - Hitting the ball before the club hits the group or at the same time is very important. A lot of times lies with less grass will stop better.
Greens - Ball will not stop on hard greens

Well the best way to do it is hit down on the ball , it takes practice , lots of practice , that's why you see big divots taken by most PGA golfers because they are trying to create a huge amount of backspin on their approach shots , also it helps to play with a high end golf ball like Prov1 or Prov1X I have found they create the most backspin if hit correctly .

Make clean crisp contact with golf ball first then let the divot happen, you're not going to create as much backspin with the long irons so allow for more roll with those irons. Contrary to what most people think deep wide divots with the short irons don't create as much backspin as you think. Tiger woods and most pros think of actually taking long shallow divots when hitting with the short irons. This produced cleaner clubface and ball contact and allows the grooves on the clubface to get maximum "grab" on the golfball. This also allows them to control their distance better. Its basically not easy it takes alot of practice and generating alot clubhead speed.

In my experience, the key is to have a good, full follow through. Don't stop the club when the club hits the ball. Try to think of swinging the club rather than hitting the ball.

Mash the ball into the ground, and take a bacon sized divot

Use a high iron, imagine the ball is one inch deep in the turf and use a forward stance.
