Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978 following perhaps the most closely contested series of races in Triple Crown history. Over the three races, Affirmed and Alydar went 1 and two, with each race finishing closer than the last. The final race (the Belmont) had one of the epic stretch duels in history with the two horses going stride for stride after the final curve. Affirmed won by less than a head.
I remember watching these races and must admit I always rooted for Alydar. One of these times he just might make it.

AFFIRMED
At the start of 1978, there had never been back-to-back Triple Crown winners and no horse had ever had to beat the same rival in all three races to earn the Triple Crown title. All that changed during the course of 1978, when Affirmed and Alydar provided the racing world with equal amounts of thrills and pathos. By the time the Belmont Stakes had been run, Affirmed was a Triple Crown winner, but Alydar emerged a heroic, sympathetic figure

Affirmed was 1978.
Secretariat was 1973.
But, Spectacular Bid did NOT win the Triple Crown in 1979. He won the Derby and Preakness, but failed to win the Belmont.
Affirmed in 1978 was the most recent Triple Crown winner.

Bwahahahaha!!
You can easily tell who knows their stuff and who doesn't.
Affirmed did it in 1978 and he was the last triple crown winner.
Secretariat won it in 1973 and Seattle Slew won it in 1977.
Spectacular Bid did NOT win the triple crown in 1979.
He is a great horse and one of my personal favorites but he lost the Belmont (came in 3rd).

Affirmed ridden by Steve Cauthen was the last to win the Triple Crown. Affirmed looked pretty, ran fast, but most of all was ready, willing and able every time he strode into the gate.

IHA isn't basically out of the Belmont, his profession is OVER for stable. He has a bowed tendon, or a minimum of curiously that way. i assumed that it regarded bowed as quickly as I observed the photos that have been taken of him after his gallop this morning- the final gallop he would be taking for an rather long term, in accordance to the vets. i've got worked with horses that had bows, and have faith me, the restoration technique is long and painful. This horse is going to be on stall relax for an prolonged time, and whilst he does get out, he will basically have the skill to hand walk slightly. it quite is not marvelous that they retired him- he's worth greater as a sire now than he ever would be as a runner. So for sure, there will be no Triple Crown winner this year.
