First and foremost, drink the best quality liquor you can afford.
Your body will react differently to different alcohols (rye, bourbon, rum, vodka, etc.) but the better the brand, the less the hangover. Use water, tonic or soda as a mixer... fruit juices and colas contain a lot of sugar and can make for nasty hangovers... Save them for the next day when they will often help make you feel better.

When you get in from a big night out, eat a bit... just a snack. Take a good multivitamin or some C & E at the very least, once you have eaten. Drink a glass of water and go to bed.
When you get up eat light, take another C & E and keep hydrated with water and juice. You should feel fine, but this will help prevent the 'slump' that often follows even a moderate 'party'.

Additional note: don't eat a meal of pasta before going on the party circuit! For some reason it makes the drinks hit you with more oomph! Nurse friend tells me it has something to do with the bile ducts in the liver... All I know is it can make for unpleasant surprises!

I recently learned that the water from an immature coconut is a great source of trace minerals, substitute for Gatorade and cure for hangover. The packaged drink is called Vita-Coco and sold in natural food stores. Or buy a coconut at the grocer's, selecting one that sounds juicey when you shake it. Punch holes in two of the eyes and drain the water into a glass.

Not drinking alcohol? Stops those damn hangovers that's for sure.

If you smoke, give up: that seems to help; being young is also effective; drinking lots of water helps also.

Drink lots of water before you go to sleep, then again when you wake up. Hangovers are caused by dehyrdration.
