Why not? Although the message would be lost in today's world, in some of those ancient pagan religions, sex was the "path to heaven". Sex was the way to worship a particular deity, for instance, Aphrodite. Why else is sex so taboo in many religions now? All the power in the path to heaven is actually in abstaining from a natural human desire.
