I'm sorry to hear about your kitten.
Unfortunately, liver disease can be difficult to detect from just looking at a cat. Also, a problem like this can hit a kitten quickly, so it might look just fine at the shelter and then develop problems once home. Regardless of the source of the cat, this can happen - I'm glad you still want to adopt and are not blaming the shelter!
Look for a kitten who is active and alert. It's eyes should be clear (no discharge and the whites should be white). It should be a good weight and have a good appetite. The kitten's coat should not be dry or flaky.
Good luck!

The shelter is supposed to give shots before releasing them, be sure you have a record. I think I would still take the kitten to my own vet and have it checked out. Blood work can be done looking for problems. Good luck. I think it is great that you got your kitten at the shelter, you tried to save a little life.

Be sure they will give you a few weeks to pick out a new one. If one had something and died it is highly probable that other cats have it there also. If they adopted it out they didn't know it was sick yet and didn't not isolate him from the others. There is a seven to ten day incubation period on most diseases. Go down check them out several times and start watching for the one you want.

Well you know this will happen again , because if you're lucky cats will stay alive for a maximum of six years if he or she is an outside cat. So it doesnt matter which one you choose as long as it's healthy , because it will die (I hate saying that word!) sooner or later.

Make sure their ears are clean inside. If there's black dirt it could be ear mites. Also make sure their nose isn't runny & they are not sneezing. I bought my cat from a pet shop & she was very ill. Luckily she survived, but the vet bills were very expensive. Hope this helps.
