Because they all claim to be the path to completeness and joy, but as soon as you ask them a question they can't categorically answer, their members get nasty and start calling you blasphemer or tell you that you should just believe it and not question.

i think it's a generalisation.

people are nasty people are nice no matter what religion, colour, race, age, or upbringing you'll get nasty people and you'll get really lovely people.

unfortunately some people are generally more outspoken, and set in their views of the world therefor will answer the questions from a defencive point of view as if you're some how attacking their views, even if you're just asking an honest question.

especialy when it's a question where there is no proof just failth.

Well, the question that u put forward does not go with the example. If the follower is an oppressor, how does it make the whole religion oppressive. 'coz of the ignorance of few followers, u cant label the religion.

Now, if u ask me abt my religion Islam, i'll indeed thank u for it, 'coz this means u care to listen, and give me a chance to promote my religion, as well as clear the misconceptions abt it, and since Islam is open for all and nothing is concealed abt it, i'll tell u anything abt it to the best of my understanding and be honest abt it. u can contact me at askabtislam@yahoo.com, or u can trace me through my id here, i'll be more than willing and glad to tell u abt it. but will request to u one thing or to anyone else who is interested, not to be blasphemous.

I dont think many will follow a blind faith or just follow what theyr told to. After all we have the power of reason - of asking "why?". its simple if someone doesnot know how to answer- they get nasty.
As for the question, the answer is No.

“ The believers, men and women are protectors one of another, they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil; they observe regular prayers. Practice regular charity, and obey Allah and his messenger. On them will Allah pour His Mercy, for Allah is exalted in power, Wise”. ( Quran 9:71)

“O human kind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into Nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (Not that ye may despise each other).
Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (one who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well-acquainted (with all things).” (49:13)
- to look into what a religion says, one must look into it religious scriptures - NOT thru what ppl. say about it ( might not always be correct ) - and defintely not by hate mongers.

My spiritual path is not oppressive and encourages all to choose whatever spiritual path is right for them. I don't believe there is any one 'correct' religious path for everyone person. Just as we are all different, how can we all possibly need the same things in our spiritual paths? I do not call you a blasphemer. The problem is the only people you have been talking to is fundamentalist Christians. :-)

yeah i agree, that does seem to be the case in many religions. Questioning a certain religion could lead to show on how inconsistant and psefto its teaching may be. Thats why i think many of the very religious followers get mad because to them its like unbeleivable that someone would have the guts to question or challenge the religion. I think its important to question and challenge religious doctrains and teachings. Besides have the teachings of christianity werent written for years after christs death. So i can only imagine how many things were changed. I think religious doctrain was written by men who seeked power after the death of crist .

No... not all religions are oppressive... just the Abrahamic death cults of desert monotheism (Judaism, Christianity, Islam)... although the Jews seem to have gotten over that, for the most part.

no, my religion is christianity.
it's no where opressive.
i have the joy of the lord in my life, 110%.
i have joy, hope, love peace, comfort, happiness too.
i back up my answers with truth, & scriptures from the bible so everyone knows it's the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth.
maybe some of the other religions are opressing, but surely not mine. it's far from it.

Don't know if oppressive is the right word. Controlling, dominating, regulating (one's thoughts).....

I take it back. Oppressive seems to sum it up nicely.

To answer your specific question: Are most religions oppressive? Absolutely!

They have the potential to be. The problem is with the people who run the religion, the interpretation they place on the texts and their reasons for doing so.
