we are looking to redo our fireplace. we are going to do a oak mantle with granite worked in below the mantle and also a granite hearth. is this a look that could eventually be outdated or do you think that granite is here to stay in homes?

I think stone in general, including granite, is here to stay. It is timeless, it has been used for centuries in European castles, residences and churches. As for granite on a fireplace, be sure to seal it and you won't have problems with soot stains if you burn real wood. Europeans don't mind the soot look, but it seems to bother Americans. I have used granite in several applications and as long as it is waxed or sealed there really isn't any problems with it. I think your design concept will not become dated.

I would say granite is here to stay, and given you are using it on a fireplace it should look fine for many years to come.

As for granite vs. quartz - I did a lot of research on this and ultimately went with granite. While yes granite can stain, the cost of sealing it is MINIMAL and lasts for a long time, so I'm just not that concerned about staining now. I've also heard that quartz chips much easier than granite. The plus side to quartz is the huge array of colors that can match anything you want!

I think granite is here to stay for quite a while. It is going to get cheaper to buy and install, but the quality and safety of the product indicates it's here for a long time. Other more porous counter tops hold bacteria and since most granite is smooth, it is keeping bacteria off of the counter. The one negative about granite is when you are going to do an under mount sink in the kitchen or bathroom. It is said that the under mount area is a breeding ground for bacteria. Good Luck

Granite is often found in kitchens as a marble substitute. Granite is cheaper and more durable ,which is nice in kitchens where the counter may get more abuse. For your fireplace if it is in the budget I would look into Marble it has a more elegant look.I have a 1880 (maybe older)fireplace that is European marble tile it is still stunning!

I personally would not purchase Granite. Quartz is the one that I would choose as it will not stain - I heard and have talked to people that have it and they said that Granite will stain. Of course, is more expensive than Granite.

here to stay. If you can afford it, it is a good thing to have and very beautiful and will stay that way for many years to come.
