Unless you live in an attic your best bet for the elements is a metal roof, I have one on both my house and my cabin. They are not a noisy as you believe. Also they reflect the heat better than shingles last much longer, and you have no worries of ice dams the snow and ice just slides right off.

I have a concrete shingle roof and love it. It is a composite, has a life time warranty, is fireproof which gives me a discount on my homeowner's insurance, it reflects the sun so it keeps the attic cooler and it comes in several colors. It is not noisy when it rains, either. And, it is no more expensive than other roofing materials, but is way less expensive than shake shingles.

White or very light color shingles are best. If you like it, wood shingles are good too but you have to remember they are very flammable if there is any chance of fire in your area. Get good 25 year rated or better shingles and you should have no trouble. Check also on an attic fan and that will keep things cooler for you or a whole house fan if that is something that would work for your area.

White reflects heat instead of absorbing it so the lighter the color, the cooler the roof.
Wood shingles are quiet and insulate well.
I would just stay with shingles, whether wood or some other material and have some insulation underneath. That is what we all do in Texas where it is very hot.

Color of material is very important. If you select a light color, such as gray or tan, your heat absorbtion rate will be lower by as much as 40 percent. High quality Asphalt shingle is probably best for low noisy-ness.

white is coolest. if you paint asphalt shigles with latex paint [they make latex roof coatings though any exterior latex will do if u get deal] after 2 years or before shingles curl, the shingles will last forever as long as u keep painting them when latex wears. read a can of roof paint & it will warrantee for 10 years? if u repaint before that u should never have to replace shingles!
the latex saves the asphalt from sun & wind degradation.
