"Racists" don't want immigrants to assimilate to American culture to lose their own identities, they only want them to be able to speak English and pay taxes.
I don't think most Americans have any problem with immigrants coming to America as long as they do it legally. Yes, you can argue that America owes its history to immigrants and I'll agree with you. However, now that there are laws regarding immigration, people should be following the rules, not coming here illegally and expect to be supported by taxpayers who have enough troubles of their own.
My parents came over from a different country, but they learned to speak English and didn't expect special treatment. They both worked and didn't live off the system and earned everything they have. We retained our culture in our home and in our community, but we're just as American as anyone else whose family has been here for generations.
Furthermore, America isn't the only country that has had major immigration by a particular nationality and they have many of the same issues; France and England are two that come to mind right away.

I think america's a good country, of course I'm biased, being an american and all. But, I feel that there's a lot of people with their hands out and lots of anger when they don't get what they want, and that's just flat childish. The thing about america that's different is that there's opportunity, including the opportunity to wander down the street whining about your bad fortune or whatever. There's also the opportunity to shrug off your bad attitude, get a fresh start, and maybe even learn something.
America's not ruled by racists, we're not south africa. But, you'll hear some people cry 'racism' again if they're not given whatever they feel they're entitled to. We've become the 'entitlement society', and there's a lot of people out there that are flat spoiled or at best have a really bad perception/misconception about our country. It's not the land of milk and honey, although you can buy those in our stores, it's the land of hard work, bangs, bruises, aching muscles, missed opportunities, lessons learned, joy and tragedy, long lines and open roads, all 4 seasons, freedom to say, think, and believe pretty much whatever you want, but for some that's not enough...they want a free ride, and everyone to think and act the way they do.
We've also got a strange history, wars and famines, new discoveries and big disappointments, scandals and riots, bravery and incompetence, innovation, stagnation, and a unique outlook not found anywhere else in the world. All in all, it's a pretty good country, but we get a lot of bad press, not that maybe some of it isn't well-deserved, america's not perfect, but at least we try where others make no pretense about indifference to their own blunders. I kind of like it. If you don't, though, there's 220+ other countries to go out and compare it to, that also have a lot to offer,..

i think you have it backwards. it is the hope of a better life that brings immigrants to the united states. the problem is that there are certain immigrants that want the american culture to change to fit their lifestyle, language or beliefs. if you are a person wanting to live somewhere other than your birth country, you should try to learn the language of the country you are moving into. example: if i were to move to mexico, i would do my best to learn the language and culture in order to make my living. it is also a matter of respect for the culture you move into. in the past, immigrants made an effort to do this. why should it be different now? as far as racism being involved in this, that's a pretty far stretch. since racism is already a part of our lives in many forms, maybe the question should have been; how can we end racism in the united states, so any legal immigrants coming and contributing to our society will feel at home? the only answer i have had that works for me is one person at a time. just be careful of grouping everyone in one large pot. some of us might take exception to being called something we are not. it is also a form of racism or bigotry.

How is it racist to think that immigrants should learn the language of the country they choose to move to? How is it racist to say that if someone wants to move to the US, they need to get a job, pay their share of taxes, and be able to support themselves? Those things are not racist. They were expected of my grandparents when they came here. And the new ones that come here should have to also.

Why are some people so prejudiced against America and Americans that they want to live in the country, get all the benefits they can from it, but don't want to contribute to its society in a positive way so they simply refuse to join the society and complain bitterly about it? Is this behavior to be proud of? Where I come from, it is considered rude and shameful behavior. We call it opportunism and opportunists are about the lowest scum of the earth.
