Physically, a rip curl is the leading edge of a breaking wave that forms the mouth of a 'barrel' as it curls over.
As to the company, I have no idea as to the origins, so would probably agree with Ken J above.

It is the most critical part of the wave in surfing...the curl is the part of the wave that throws over and you ofter see people getting 'tubed'. The 'rip' part of it is the current or power of the water when it produces the 'curl' by going in to shallow water. Hence the 'rip curl' is the most powerful, moving part of a ridden wave....

Agree with answer 2. Except the 'rip' part refers to the wave being caused by a rip-tide. Basically a beach sloping away from the shore, will mean an approaching wave will collapse over the retreating water beneath it (from the last wave).
Like when you get sucked back after being hit by a wave. If you new wave hits this water it collapses over it often creating the type of wave favoured by some surfers.
Not a surfer, just a beach-bum.
