There is no real value in continuing to use win98 ..or for that matter anything less than Win2000.

If you must use win98 like functionality go Win2000.

I still use win2000 for systems that I rebuild that are too old for antyhing newer than w2k.

If it cant handle w2k, I scrap the box or salvage the parts when doable...otherwise its worthless.

A pc that is sub-w2k is a waste of time & money to continue to use.

I wont even bother upgrading a unit that is too old.
My neice has a win98 box that is P2 and 64meg ram.
And can be upgraded on memory to 128meg but is not worth the time. I can litterly buy her a nearly modern system for the cost of the needed upgrades her pc requires.
Personally I wouldnt pay more than $5 for a sub-500mhz or sub w2k system.
Shoot you can buy a nearly brand new pc for the cost of upgrading a old enough box and be much better for it.

What are you doing? Microsoft doesnt support 98 anymore. There are no hotfixes, no more service packs. What you are doing is borderline unethical. 98 has MANY security flaws in it that are well known. If you put this computer on the Internet, it will be attacked in less than 5 min. The actual Time To Live, unprotected on the net, even with XP, is less than 3 minutes. Think about what you are doing. Chances are, if you have a 98 computer, you can often add some ram and get em up to Xp. All you need is 256mb to run xp. 512 to run efficiently. An ethical professional would never do what you are trying to do. You need to tell your customer the level of risk he is taking. No ammount of anti-virus or anti-syware would help. There are too many exploits just in the OS itself. Dont get 98 for him, make him upgrade.
