dogs are good at healing them self's but if it's very bad i would ask the vet for a cream that you put on and you could then cover their paws with socks until they heal.. my dog always cuts her paws when i take her out but that evening she just licks them and they heal up. your dogs paws will do the same. it's good your worried and that you walk your dog but she'll be OK. love for her is the best cure and she already has that or you wouldn't be asking this question

I have a retriever too and she was totally nuts up to the age of 5 and just ran herself ragged for the hell of it, I got so worried about her as she had sore looking paws too, the best thing is for her to just rest when possible and less running round and been on the lead for a day or too with no freedom to run off wild anywhere when you take her out till her paws look better, her leg might be sore with over doing it on the exercise, there is a free on line vet on the Internet, sorry not sure what its called but just put, free on line vet advice in and hopefully something will come up if your so worried about her, she sounds just a crazy and loving as my Amber does and hopefully she has taught herself a lesson now and won't be as dopey as to do that again, hope she is feeling much better soon and you have lots and lots of good times together as I am sure you will they are the most amazing dog.

Wrap an ace bandage around the leg that she is limping on. If she will leave it alone it will help reduce any pressure on it and keep her from injuring it further. Lots of rest. Don't worry too much about the pads unless they start to crack and bleed. My dogs do that a lot too and they always just grow back. If she is not better in a few days then the vet.

Wash her paws to clean out any smaller cuts that aren't visible. Then just let her rest. She'll be up running again in a day or so. My dogs paws were sore this weekend during a backpacking trip and I found that he was seeking out patches of snow. So see if your dog will let you rub an ice cube over her sore paws. If she seems to be in pain, ask your vet for the proper dosage of buffered aspirin.
As for the limping, she could just be sore from all of the running. Make a note of which leg it is and continue to watch it over the next few days. Most likely, she'll be fine and start using it again normally. If not, you'll want to take her to the vet to check for arthritis or an injury.

What surface was she running on? It has been pretty hot everywhere so i can only assume it is hot where you are also. She may want to go outside but I would keep her indoors and make her rest for a few days and take her for walks in the cooler evenings. No matter how bad she wants to run it is important that you let her pads heal up a bit. ONce they start to crack or tear or get scuffed badly she will begin to lick them quite a bit possibly compounding your problem. Dogs dissipate heat through their paws and spend a loit of time on them so the care of those pads is very important.

I have a Golden Retriever and he does it all the time, I think its just one of those unfortunate things that these dogs suffer from, from time to time, all I do is clean it every day with clean water, the rest I leave to him, he constantly licks it better, but when he does this I don't walk him outside, I have to wait until it is healed before I take him out again. Unless it becomes infected, u need not worry about it, just keep it clean. If it does become infected then take him/her straight to the vet's

You can buy a product called paw wax that you can apply to her pads until they heal, she may also have pulled a muscle so rest is the only solution for that and if there is no improvement after say 3 days then you should take her to the vet and get anti inflammatory's and or analgesics.
PS. Resting a dog=Not easy!!!

You can give regular asprin tablet the 325mg type.
YOu give 1/4 of a tablet per 10 pounds of body weight.
I start mine on one tablet and if they are still in pain I will give 1 and 1/2 I have 70 pounds Weims.
For her pads they will heal on thier own and are best left alone unless they are raw.
You may want to get a jar of Tuff Stuff to put on her pads. It will hep to toughen them up and they will be less likely to get sore.
Look for it or something like it in the hunting dog sections of pet supply places. We use it on ours if we are hunting every day.

I agree with the other answers apart from not letting her lick her pads, my dog cut one of his front pads open quite badly on some broken glass, i rang the vet and she said as long as it was kept clean it would heal on its own, he was licking it regularly and now you would never know he had done it, just give her lots of love and keep her on grass surfaces until she gets better, good luck

Wash her paws out with a mild soap, dish soap is best. It is not harmful if you leave a little behind and they lick it off. Then put Neosporin on her pads. It also isn't harmful if they lick it a little. Wrap them if she will let you and won't chew that off. Just try to keep her from licking them, that is the key to them heeling faster.
