Looks for a specific instruction in files that are typical to a specific virus. It could be anything! Anything that's specific to a certain virus can be part of anti-virus code. Anti-virus are useless because someone can change the correct bytes in the virus and it will be undetectable!

When a program has a virus, code has been added to it that causes problems. This code has a specific pattern that an antivirus program can detect. As new viruses are created the patterns are added to a library which your computer downloads to keep the antivirus software up to date.
