Kabbalah is Jewish mysticism not a separate religion.

Kabbalah is an esoteric form of Jewish mysticism, which attempts to reveal hidden mystical insights in the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible). It offers mystical insight into divine nature.

Its all about finding links to God. Ever see the Tree of Life? It is a symbol of the interconnected hierarchies of the universe.

Keep in mind Kabbalah was created back in the times of the Ptolemic system, in which Earth was thought to be the center of the universe and everything orbitted it in perfect spherical shells. This idea of layers influence Kabbalah's structure. It is stressed that there is God at the core and everything is placed as emanations of the Creator. (Like being at the bottom of the pyramid climbing to the singular point at the top, but everything IS the pyramid... separated but still a part of the whole. Get it?)

Through Kabbalah one learns their place and tries to find a way to reconnect with God.

However, nowadays Kabbalah has degenerated to a fashionable trend in Hollywood. A vehicle to fulfill their need for a exclusive group to belong to, a sort of status symbol.

Cabbala or Kabala is NOT a religion, despite Madonna's attempts.

It is Jewish occultism, replete with a mythos, a host of rituals and chants and study aids, all of which are supposed to save you from the awfulness of being separated from the Lord God. Since the early Middle Ages, it has leaned heavily on certain aspects of Gnosticism, especially the let's-get-outta-matter part.

A cabal is a secret society. Cabbala is a secret study done in secret by members of the cabal.

Not a religion, but a mystical path stemming from a combination of Judaism, other Middle Eastern and Babylonian sources.

It works on the translation of words, numbers, Names of God etc. in order that one might transcend their limited ideas and beliefs about reality into higher levels, and eventually approach the Godhead.

Just a system, like thousands of others out there used to reach higher states of consciousness.

Kabbalah is Jewish Mysticism that began in the middle ages. The word itself means 'light.'

You should check wikipedia. That's a great source for introductions to stuff.

Surprisingly, it's treated with a degree of respect in Jewish circles. For those of us in christian circles who assume it would be totally ignored as nonsense, it's not, really. It fits fairly well into the idea of the 'Oral Torah.' So it's accepted to a degree even in the more conservative circles.

Course, the other cool thing about Judaism is that it can accomodate a wide variety of opinions on subjects such as this.
