I think most people just do it out of habit because that's what everyone else does. I think it started because people wanted to cheapen the character of God and so they use His name in vain as if He isn't important. The reason they don't use other god's names is because they are completely insignificant.

God's name and the name that belongs to the Anointed One of God are not used as curses at all. This is because the Name is not known by anyone today and is now lost. Because of the importance quite obviously given to the Name of God throughout the Scriptures, it's surprising that so very few have attached any significance to the lost Name. The lost Name is also the lost Word, and when the Word is lost, so also is the Truth lost.

The ancient Hebrews forgot the Name of God at the same time that they forgot the Truth. When the Name was forgotten, they adopted a substitute, "Baal," and when the Truth was forgotten, they adopted a substitute, their own traditions.

The Gentiles were then given the Name and the Truth as the New Testament writings show. The Gentiles have nothing to boast about to the Jews as they have followed exactly in their footsteps. When the Gentiles forgot the Name, they substituted "Lord," and when they forgot the Truth, they substituted their own traditions.

When the Name is known, so also is the Word and the Truth known.

kma22263 is right. God said not to take His name in vain so people rush to do it. If the Bible said not to take the devil's name in vain, people would be all over that.
