For a wisdom tooth that has come through, can it just be extracted like a regular tooth, or is there still special things that need to be done? And what exactly does extracted mean? Do dentists have to cut the gum when they remove teeth?

If your wisdom teeth have erupted above the gums completely than, yes, it is the same as a regular extraction in their technique. The only major difference is the ease with which they can access the tooth since they are all the way in the back of your mouth!

The only time your gums need to be cut (or your jaw 'broken' as someone suggested, which isn't done for any wisdom tooth extraction that I've seen) is if the wisdom teeth haven't erupted from your gums or is still under the bone and/or impacted.

They use a surgical blade to cut your gums and if they need to access inside the bone to get to the tooth the oral surgeons I've seen have a heavy duty drill they use to grind away the bone over the tooth to access it.

However, that person was right, it's done all over the world by probably hundreds of people each day! However, you sound like you won't have any of those problems.

Good luck with your wisdom teeth. :-)

Some wisdom teeth can be extracted like regular teeth. But some need to be extracted by a specialist. Some wisdom teeth cannot be extracted at all, in rare cases, because they are too close to a nerve and can cause permanant nerve damage such as paralysis of the face.
Extracted is just the dental term to mean pull.
Gums do not always have to be cut to pull/extract wisdom teeth, only if they are hard to get out.
The more curved the roots are on any tooth the harder they are to extract, but any dentist that attempts to pull a wisdom tooth will do so only if he is 100% sure he can get it out ( they like to avoid lawsuits of cousre) so don't worry.

Yes the problem lies with the root of the tooth, It has to be cut free from the gum, a small hammer is used to knock the tooth out, cracking the jaw bone so to remove the root.

This is why you will have have to be put to sleep as it would not be nice to hear, all the crunching and knocking with the tools they use.

But dont worry people have this completed every day in every city of the world.
