Bergen County, NJ is probably the closest, however, it can be VERY pricey.
You might also want to consider Rockland County, NY if you're working on the West Side or Westchester County, NY if you're working on the East Side. Same kind of commute time and price range. Decent schools and great malls.

Hi,
You know it may not seem like it, but the parts of NJ that are easily accessible to NYC are quite numerous. What type of area are you looking for, city, suburban, etc. Also, how long are you willing to travel? Do you plan on driving or taking mass transit (train, bus, even NJ ferry). Think about these and then I think someone can better pinpoint a good spot for you.
Personally, of late, I'm from the Middletown area of NJ (though currently living in Ghana), you can get to NYC by bus (Academy Lines), train (NJ Transit) and Ferry (Belford and Atlantic Highlands). Middletown is about 1:15 minutes away from NYC driving. And of course, where in NYC you will be working should also be a factor; uptown, midtown, downtown.
I also lived in Jersey City, just across the river, accessible by bus, commuter van, PATH train.
Let us know and we'll help as best we can.

the nearest suburbs are not necessarily the nicest. I would look at the area around Short Hills, NJ...great schools, great mall and a fairly easy commute into the city. But take public transportation....driving into the city is expensive and a nightmare!
