anyway i use 3 sets right now. i want to tone up and gain strength also, but i am not looking to get real big. any input would be really helpful!

That is good for now, but eventually your body will plateau. It will adapt to the same training. So, you need to mix it up and keep you body from adapting. Throw in days with 4-5 sets or one day with 1-2 sets with heavy weights. Also vary reps 8-10 good for a balance of size and strength. 6-8 for more power, and sometimes 10-12 for tone and definition.

Well i guess tis fine so far, if you want to progress, try DAPRE technique- it comprises 4 sets: set1. 10 repitions of one half the working wieght set 2. 6 repitions fo three fourths the working weights. set 3: as many repitions as possible of the full working weights . set4: as many repitions as possible of the adjusted weights( is based on the number of repetitions of the full working weight performed during set 3) NOte:determine an initial working weight ( try 6Rm)... try to keep a record on your program if theres progress or not.
