The lawyer wants $1750.00. I have experience with government forms, but no experience with immigration matters. Additionally, I am seeking a waiver of the "meet in-person" requirement based on her society's cultural practices that would make us subject to violent ridicule. Also, her country is on the US travel warning list--Americans are strongly warned to avoid travel to her country. Ideally, some attorneys will take the time to answer. Thanks for your time.

With your requirements, I would strongly sugguest an attorney, otherwise you stand little to no chance of being approved. It's intensly difficult to begin with to get a fiancee visa approved, and considering you two will know nearly nothing about eachother, that gives you even less of a chance. Been there with someone who's country WASN'T on the travel warning, who I have known for many years.

A girlfriend of mine also worked for Immigration & Naturalization, and during discussion a few months ago mentioned that visas under similar circumstances are exceptionally rare.

Use an attorney. Make sure it is someone who really knows what he is doing. I had an attorney when I wanted to apply for a fiance visa and he took the time to explain to me the difference between doing it yourself and through a lawyer. He was really nice because he did not push me to use him just for the money. One of the things that make a difference is how you met. If it is someone you met online, you definitely want to use a lawyer. The lawyer will know any changes in the laws and keep updated, you won't. The lawyer will tell you everything you need and will make sure you have everything before you start so that all will go well, plus sometimes they have connections. If you do it by yourself and you don't have everything you need or you do something that will cause a delay, it can take a very long time for it to go through and even after that long wait, there is no guarantee that your fiance will get that visa. With a lawyer, once everything is provided and there is no delay, it will only take approx. 3 to 4 months if the person is coming from a foreign country. I am not sure how long it will take for someone from Canada since it is closer. Believe me, it is worth using a lawyer. If you are in the New York area, I can give you a great lawyer. He has the experience. He is really nice too. Good luck. Here is his information:

I did not use an attorney to bring my fiance here. The process took a little under 6 months to process and yes, I made an error. But you can save the bucks and do it yourself. One other thing, unless you have solid proof about the "meet in person" waiver, they will deny you. I tried that route myself and was denied the first time. Contact me for additional information.

I think you will be fine. The hardest part is filling out those damned forms! They read like tax forms...a language I someday would like to learn. Also about the "violent ridicule" what country is it? Iraq? I think you could hire an armed guard, but that may not be possible. Just think though, you are putting youself in the face of danger for your love. Kinda like James Bond.
