Because MS has installed some spyware on your PC called Windows Genuine Advantage which is supposed to check that your version of Windows is genuine. The problem is that if you do anything to the PC, like change a soundcard or take it to be repaired, Windows will give you a false positive. If you have a genuine Windows CD, phone MS support in your locale and complain.
Alternatively, remove Windows and install Linux - no viruses, no adware, no spyware, no registry foul-ups, no Swiss cheese applications, no script kiddies, no worries.

The windows inbuilt feature attempts to recieve updates from the internet for its various programmes. In the course of recieving updates, if it is unable to do so, it says that the copy of windows may not be genuine and you may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This is true in many cases, however the phenomenon also occurs when you reinstall windows on your pc following a virus problem. if u use the same cd to install, the computer may think the reused cd is fake software. The message will go away in a few days if you dont take any action. But if you think your software is fake, ask whoever installed it.

Contact Microsoft at (http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx#Question6Label)
Microsoft can sometimes help piracy victims to make your installation legitimate. You may qualify for a complimentary copy of Windows or you may be able to buy a product key number.

You don't have a legal copy of Windows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hold on let me look up the number for Microsoft to report you--joking
If it is a good, legal copy -- call Microsoft or the company where you bought the Windows from, they should be able to help you.
