I have a 1 1/2 year old male cat. About 8 weeks ago we noticed he had lost a lot of weight almost over night (about 8 lbs). I've dewormed him with whip, tape and round worm wormers. His fecal tests were all negative but we wormed him again anyway. His blood tests are normal, negative for FIV or Heartworm. He eats normal, drinks lots of water, bowels are normal (no worms), no vomitting, very active still, friendly and playful. Just losing lots of weight. I also have a 1 year old female cat and she is not sick at all. They share food and water bowls and share a litter box. She is an inside/outside cat, he is strictly inside. Neither one have fleas.

The only thing wrong with him is reoccuring ear mites. Would ear mites cause weight loss like this? She does NOT have ear mites.

Thyroid test was normal.

I am up to $1100 in tests (fecal, blood, urine, x-rays, ultrasounds). All was normal. Diabetes, heartworm, thyroid, all normal. They even tested semen to see if maybe there was an issue "in there". But everything comes back normal. Medically speaking, test wise, there is NOTHING wrong with him. But, he's losing weight drastically (despite eating and drinking normally).

Two things I can think of right off the bat. Since he is 11/2, he is losing his 'baby fat' and maturing into his adult weight/body type. Its also summer...even though he is strictly an inside cat, the heat can make a cat not eat as much. Some people, while they are gone for the day, turn down the a/c in their homes to save energy. This might be the reason he isnt eating as much. You didnt mention if he had a full blood work-up performed. If he did have one, that would have caught any major disorder/diseases. It sounds to me as though you are the perfect cat owner. You take very good care of your pets and that is something to be proud of!!

We had a cat that was normal for years, she lost a lot of weight almost over night, The vet checked her thyroid and found it was hyperactive. Might be the problem.

Feline diabetes maybe. I don't know if this would show up in a blood test. Maybe they need to test his urine.
