I have an Eskimo Spitz. Where his tail curls over his back he is scratching so much that he has ripped out alot of his hair, the skin is red and there are some spots that have scabbed over. I bathed him in an antibacterial shampoo that was supposed to help with crusts and scabs but he is still digging. He doesn't have ANY fleas and he is an inside dog. He doesn't go outside and roll in the grass. He is 2 years old and this has just recently started. Any ideas?

Okay, since there are some buttholes out there let me add a little more to this. My "genius" vets around here have diagnosed 3 of my dogs as being allergic to flea bites, including my Spitz. I just don't see that many dogs being allergic to fleas, whatever did dogs do before these miracle flea medicines? For allergy testing, my vet wants $2000.00 I do not have that kind of money to find out what my dog is allergic to when they won't prescribe any medicine for it anyways. I was asking for OPINIONS or possibly people's experience with these things. Maybe someone else had been through the same thing.

Many dogs have a skin disease, and this time of year they get really dry and scratch. Therefore leaving scabs. My dog, as well as many different breeds do the same thing. Try to keep the nails very short and my vet also recommended putting some vegetable oil in her food. I use a capful. Don't bathe your dog as often, only when really dirty and don't use anything with fragrance in it. I use baby shampoo on my dog. II figure if it is mild enough for a baby, it will be good for my dog. The vegetable oil has really made a difference.

There is no way of telling how he will react if you've never left him this long before, as each dog is different. I know someone who had to leave their dog alone for a few hours each day for work, and their dog gets so upset when they're gone that the dog rips up everything it can. Eventually they had to buy a cage to put her in when they go out (although I believe dogs can be trained out of this!) On the other hand, when I had a dog, he seemed pretty alright with it. Nicked any cooked meat my mum left out on the worktop, but I blame my mum for that for not putting it in the fridge! Your dog may well suffer from some anxiety, he may howl and bark or he might end up trying to tear things up in frustration - although it sounds like your dog trusts you, so I'd be more inclined to think he won't tear stuff up, especially if he gets a decent walk! It might be a good idea to leave a T.V. on or something so that he doesn't feel so alone.

My dog did the same thing, and she had a really bad flea problem. Take him to the vet. The vet will know what to do.

It could be an allergic reaction to dog food. My dog went through this she is 2 yrs old. Some dog food contains corn glutamate which some dogs can be allergic. My dog was allergic to that and we changed her food and treats. Now she stopped scratching and pulling out her hair. Take your dog to the vet anyways just in case.

Although it may seem like he doesn't have fleas some dogs are allergic to fleas so one bite would feel like 10. My sister's dog has this problem and it sounds like your dog may have the same thing. The fleas do not have to live on your dog for your dog to have this problem.

Your dog might have some allergic reaction? It's probably better to go to the vet, even if it's expensive. Sometimes the shampoo makes things worse.. he might have sensitive skin.

He needs to go to the vet. He could have some sort of skin problem. Hopefully it's as simple as dry skin. But he really should see a vet to be sure. Better to be safe.

Allergies? At least try some benedryl. 25 mg for a 40 lbs. dog. Cortizone spray to help the sores heal.

He may have something called mange. My dog had it. I had to take her to the vet and get some kind of powdered medication to mix with water and rub on spots that were raw. It helped her a lot, you should look into that.

He might have a skin disorder that needs treatment from a vet. Maybe psoriasis? Take him to a vet and he can tell you what it is, but to me it sounds like a skin problem.
