Any of the Little People toys are good for this age. My son received quite a few of these and still loves playing with them (he will be 3 in Sept.). There are also puzzles out there that make noises (by Melissa and Doug). Some of them are farm animals, trains, cars, etc. You can find these at large teacher stores or I have also seen them in Carters clothing stores.

Clothes are also very helpful for the parents. Kids at this age don't know any better so you might as well buy them that when they don't care. For my son's 2nd birthday if he opened a box with clothes he pushed them aside.

Hopefully this helps!

Get him a toy car. Not a small one you know like the bigger plastic ones. They have them at walmart very cheap. Books are always good. My kids love the ones that have music buttons or sound buttons on the side. It's never to early to start with reading

My daughter turned 1 in May and got a sand box. She LOVES her sand box and plays in it every day.

You could also get a portrait gift card so that the parents can take him in to get photos taken

Savings bond for college

If he's not walking on his own yet you could get him a push toy. The kind where he has to pull himself up on it and walk behind it my nephew got a few for his 1st birthday he loves them and he's getting ready to walk on his own. If he is walking already then you could get him a toy with colors and shapes it'll come in handy for a few years.

For a one year old, things that make noises or light up are really good. It helps them to develop their motor skills!! His mom might not like it, but he WILL!! :-)
