Shaving your head may seem like a good idea, but think about the different stages of it growing back in - could you cope with these? Depending on wigs is not a good idea as wearing a wig all the time can mean your scalp is not "breathing", but is "overheating". You will damage both your scalp and the little hair you have. Ask your GP to send you to a Tricologist or a Dermatologist for another opinion.

Good wigs are expensive. Cheap wigs look fake.
I'd say wear a hat when it's windy and let your hair grow. Otherwise you're just adding to the time it will take for your hair to grow longer and cover the spots.
And do talk to the doctor who prescribed your steroids and ask about this possible side effect. There may be an alternate treatment with meds that don't cause hair loss.

Stop taking the steroids, for one. If your hair is that short and it's balding, then shave it and wear a wig. They DO work, and it will be a lot more comfortable for you until your hair grows back.

I shaved my head last Thanksgiving - well, used clippers with the #2 blade - and now i'm growing it back. it's a very troublesome stage now, about 3 inches long, and not very attractive, but it's too short to use clips or hairpins or even a headband yet.
i got a lot of compliments when it was about 3/4 of an inch long, but after about 1" long the compliments stopped, and i expect i'll look pretty unattractive for the next yearor so until it gets to my shoulders.
so, very big step with 2 or 3 years of consequences
just wanted to share

It will take longer for your hair to grow if you shave it. If the bald spots are not growing any hair at all, it won't grow if you start off with a shaved head (and it will be even more noticeable when the rest of your hair grows). Keep growing it out...no shaving necessary.

The question you should ask yourself is, do you want to shave your head? If you do, I say go for it. I shaved mine once and it was an interesting experience. Found out that my scalp could feel things that with hair I never experienced before. Like when I would lay my head on a pillow, it was amazing how much feeling my scalp had. It was fun to grow out into various stages as well. And as they say, it's only hair and it grows back. Enjoy it, enjoy the shaving experience, enjoy growing it back.

There is no need to shave your head and wear a wig. my grandmother had cancer, lost her hair, and had to wear a wig...The problem with that was, the wig was making it to where her hair wouldn't grow back fast enough...and also it was way too thin..she finnaly gave up the wig idea and decided to not care what others thought...Now she has a head full of thick hair again...she told me that the wig idea was one of the worst ideas she has ever accepted in her life.

if you shave it and wait for your hair to grow back you'll still have bald spots, just wear a wig now.
