When I offered to pay half of the gas cost on a 250+ mile trip, the person I am getting a ride from said, "No, you don't have to do that, I was going to go anyway." Now, he was going to go anyway, I just found out about it and asked if I could ride with. But I know there is no such thing as a free ride, and I want to make it easier to take these trips in the future. How do I politely pay for what I consider to be my share?

Offer to pay twice - if he won't accept, then insist that you either (1) buy food on the way, or (2) he let you pay next time. If it's really important to you buy a prepaid gas card after the trip, put it in an evelope with a thank you card and mail it to him.

Pull out the money and offer it to him. He might take it. Or if you stop at a gas station along the way, get out of the car and zap your card in the pump before he does and tell him to fill it up.

If he refuses then just file the debt away. Sometime he might need a favor and then return it. Maybe you could give him a nice thank you gift. A gift certificate to a restaurant or something like that.

If this is a regular trip you have to make - maybe you could drive next time.

You could offer to buy the food/drink for the trip and pay for any meals that you have along the way. Otherwise you could just insist on paying 1/2 the fuel costs.

Well, your offer will go a long way towards keeping good will, even if he didn't accept it. Offer to do the driving next time. Or get him a thank you gift of some kind. If it's a long enough trip to be stopping for coffee or whatever, buy the coffee at least, or buy him lunch.

If the person won't take any money, offer to pay for food, etc, on the way. Or, if you think they are just being polite, make the offer again, saying it would make you feel better about accepting.

I like the honest approach and in situations like this say: "If you allow me to pay, then I will feel comfortable asking you for a similar favour again. If you do not allow me to make a contribution, it makes me feel uncomfortable". If the person still does not want to accept payment, offer to buy lunch, a soda or whatever.

I would suggest that when the person in question says 'I was going to go, anyway', you should reply by pointing out that if YOU had gone on your own, it would have cost you the full amount. Then re-iterate your offer by saying 'this way, we're both better off than if we'd gone seperately...'
