Indeed, an age old question. That said, you mentioned a couple of important health/medication which may be mitigating factors regarding insomnia.
First, you mentioned that you are currently taking Darvocet for pain. Often opiate type analgesics (and their analogues) can cause a paradoxical reaction in the form of stimulant -like side effect. Moreover, given the fact you are in pain, can be attributing to your sleep problem: And I have no doubt you are in pain, because Darvon/Darvocet is a very poor analgesic. The narcotic in the drug has the "pain killing" effect which is, at best, equal to ASA (Look it up in any medical journal - "It's a pill with all of the addiction potential of a controlled substance, without the effectivness of your basic asprin."). In short, try a different medication for pain (and maybe look for a MD who isn't stuck in the prescribing practices of 1975). If your pain is moderate to severe their are a number of more effective opiate options: hydrocodone, oxycodone, and if your pain is quite severe - methadone.
Another medication you mention was a "sleeping pill", which could mean anything from a benzodiazipine to a barbituate. Irrespective of the medication type, they all create a physical tolerance after more than two weeks of continual use. To put it simply: your body gets used to the medication and the only way it can still be effective is to take more. Unfortunately, this is not an option.
Finally, here are some medication type suggestions (I'll leave out all the lifestyle issues [coffee, exercise, sleep hygene.........ect] because I'm sure your sick of these glib suggestions and just want to get a good nights slumber!). Here we go: Magnesium aspertate hydrocloride (not oxide or any other form); 3-4 gravol tabs 50mgs, benadryl 50 mg tabs x 3. Rx suggestions: Dalmane (it has a longer half-life than most hypnotics), Desaryl (an old line anti-deprssent often quite useful for longterm use in chronic insomnia).
I wish you all the best!

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Treatment for insomnia
In many cases, insomnia is caused by another disease or psychological problem. In this case, medical or psychological help may be useful.
Many insomniacs rely on sleeping tablets and other sedatives to try to get some rest. The most commonly used class of hypnotics prescribed for insomnia are the benzodiazepines. This includes drugs such as temazepam, diazepam, lorazepam, nitrazepam and midazolam. These medications can be addictive, especially after taking them over long periods of time.
Non-benzodiazepine prescription drugs, including the Ambien and Lunesta, are quickly replacing benzodiazepines as a first-line treatment for insomnia, as these drugs show little to no possibility of addiction or dependence.
Some antidepressants such as mirtazapine, trazodone and doxepin have a sedative effect, and are prescribed off label to treat insomnia.
Low doses of Atypical antipsychotics such as quetiapine(Seroquel) are also prescribed for their sedative effect.
Some insomniacs use herbs such as valerian, chamomile, lavender, hops, and passion-flower.
Some claim to have overcome insomnia through the use of marijuana. Though there are no reliable sources to prove its effectiveness.
Some traditional remedies for insomnia have included drinking warm milk before bedtime, taking a warm bath in the evening; exercising vigorously for half an hour in the afternoon, eating a large lunch and then having only a light evening meal at least three hours before bed, avoiding mentally stimulating activities in the evening hours, and making sure to get up early in the morning and to retire to bed at a reasonable hour. Pomagranates are also believed to be able to help insomniacs sleep.
Traditional Chinese medicine has included treatment for insomnia throughout its history. A typical approach may utilize acupuncture, dietary and lifestyle analysis, herbology and other techniques, with the goal to resolve the problem at a subtle level. Although these methods have not been scientifically proven, some insomniacs report these remedies are sufficient to break the insomnia cycle without the need for sedatives and sleeping tablets[citation needed]. Warm milk contains high levels of tryptophan, a natural sedative. Using aromatherapy, including lavender oil and other relaxing essential oils, may also help induce a state of restfulness. Melatonin has proved effective for some insomniacs, mostly in regulating the sleep/waking cycle.
The more relaxed a person is, the greater the likelihood of getting a good night's sleep. Relaxation techniques such as meditation have been proven to help sleep. They take stress from the mind and body which leads to a deeper more restful sleep.[citation needed]
Helpful advice:
* Avoid all stimulating substances/activities such as caffeine and exercise before bedtime.
* Avoid distractions in the bedroom including excessive light and noise, television, alarm clocks, etc.
* Avoid stressful thoughts and feelings before bedtime and while attempting to fall asleep.
* Combat worries and preoccupations about the day ahead by tending to plans and schedules before bedtime.
* Background noise, such as a fan or soft rhythmic music, can serve to ease some individuals into sleep.
Multifaceted approaches
In the Buddhist tradition, people suffering from insomnia or nightmares may be advised to meditate on "loving-kindness", or metta. This practice of generating a feeling of love and goodwill can have a soothing and calming effect on the mind and body[1]. This seems to stem partly from the creation of relaxing positive thoughts and feelings, and partly from the pacification of negative ones. In the Mettā Sutta, Siddhartha Gautama, "The Buddha" tells the gathered monks that easeful sleep is one benefit of this form of meditation.
Many who have cured their insomnia have done so by reviewing and experimenting with many different cures. Often, a combination of dietary and lifestyle changes can prove to be the most helpful approach. As with many similar health problems, a determined, across-the-board holistic approach to sleeping problems is often advisable.
