If you get a leak in a pipe, instinct is to plug it with your finger and to stop the water from gushing out.
That stops the water for as long as you're standing around with your finger there, but while you're doing that you can't get on with the real job of fixing the pipe.
To get the job done, you've got to pull your finger out and work on actually fixing the pipe.
Hence, pull your finger out and get on with it!!!

I suppose they could be referring to the metaphor of the boy who stuck his finger in the dike to prevent the dam from overspilling...in which case, I would have to say that the lake behind the dike would represent the emotional baggage of your past, and your finger in the dike is unecessary, but you find it hard to pull away lest the dike break and flood you in your own past. In which case, pulling your finger free and walking away from it and getting on with your life would be the healthy thing to do.

They mean stop procrasternating and start working.
I think maybe they mean pull your metaphorical finger (ambition) out of the metaphorical Chinese finger puzzle (procrasternation) and put your metaphorical finger (ambition) to good use.

I've never heard that one before.
Maybe they're saying forget the little things and go one with life.
