It depends on your pallate, do you like sweet or spicy? And what you plan on serving with it. The rule of thumb is light foods with white wine, rich foods with red. ex: fish & white, steak &red.
But let me simplify: Reds are thicker, richer and spicier. The sweeter reds are probably italian such as a chiantti, or french such as an Anjou. Also, blends of cabernet and sauvignon tend to be soft on the pallate. Merlot is a bit dry (which means you have a dry texttured after taste) and Pinot noir is the best red (and tends to be pricier because of it's diculty to make)
White and roses are lighter and are served cold. If your whites and roses are served room temperature or hot they have a bitter after taste, so CHILL them before serving. These are lighter and won't get you as drunk as reds, but will give you a nighty hang over if you over do it. Chardonay is probably the way to go if you're new to whites, they are a bit mellower than say a grigio. if you want something sweet try white zinfandel (look down uopn by most wine conosours) but pretty tasty and inexpensive.
The best thing to do is gather some friends, ask that they each bring a bottle and go cork happy tasting! That's the best way to determine what suits your wine needs. Happy tasting!

The wine you choose has to be thought out carefully. If you are having a white meat, white wine is better (generally), if you are having red meat, either white or red can go depending on the seasonings and type of meat.
Choosing the wrong wine to accompany your dish can make the wine seem extra bitter and the person would not be enjoying the true quality of the wine.

The lighter the meat, the lighter the wine and vice versa.
Also, red wine has a higher calorie content, although more calories mean more alcohol content as well. If you're looking to get buzzed-- go with red.

I prefer Red Wine. Some people though drink white with lighter dishes and red with heavier dishes. I don't care what I am eating. I always prefer red.
