Many times dogs get too excited for their owners to cut the hair themselves. Groomers have noticed that once the owners leave, the dogs calm down a lot. If you do want to save money and not having the hassle of sending him to a groomers, maybe ask a friend to do it for you? Just make sure he doesn't bite. I know this because my ex roommate shaved my dog once for me, and she told me that when I left at the final stage (facial hair cutting), he stayed calm.

Dogs are like children. If you have children, what happened first time you tried to cut his hair? They need to know the rules. Thats why there are professional groomers. We have tables and restraints that make grooming safer and easier.
We are highly skilled professionals and it takes a long time to perfect our craft. Accidents can happen when an unskilled person attempts to uas clippers or scissors for a do it yourself job. See a groomer and take her/ his advice.

I put the leash on my dog, she knows she is now in my control just like when we walk. She then calms down and I am able to make her lie still. It will take a few times of doing it. Keep talking calmly to your dog, telling it what a good dog it is.

The dog whisperer says that you should take him for a long walk to use up some of his energy before you do things like that. They will be to tired to fight back. Try that.

The easy solution would be to take him to a dog groomer. They specialise in this sort of thing
