Set yourself a goal and maybe even set up a little reward for yourself when you get through a book. You could chart your progress through the book with a chart on your fridge with the number of chapters. Check off each chapter as you finish it.

The usual key to reading faster is to read more. The more you read the better you are at it. There are some courses on speed reading out there but I don't know if they're any good.

The great thing about nonfiction books is that most of them are not designed or intended to be read straight through. Most nonfiction books have sections. Maybe to prevent boredom you could read a few sections of interest in one book then later read some from another. A break from one subject to another may rekindle your interest and prevent you from burnout on a particular subject. One geography book I know that is set up in this manner is "Don't Know Much About Geography:Everything You Need to Know About the World but Never Learned" by Kenneth C. Davis. Each "chapter" is only a few pages long, so if you get bored you can just set it aside and resume later.

p.s. he also has books about History, Mythology, the Bible, the Universe... http://www.amazon.com/s/104-5681630-5237553?ie=UTF8&index=books&rank=-relevance%2C%2Bavailability%2C-daterank&field-author-exact=Kenneth%20C.%20Davis

Maybe you're an auditory learner, and want some vocal feedback on the material. This is one of the advantages to having a teacher who is an "expert".

But, if you don't have that, maybe you can find book clubs to discuss the materials. That may help keep your interest, and reinforce the learning.

Just concentrate and force yourself to read. Its a case of mind over matter.
