Does anyone know whether bridal boutiques sell hoop skirts? I bought a tulle slip from one, but have decided to use a 3 or 4 hoop skirt instead. However, I don't know whether they sell them and if they do, what the price is.

Has anybody actually used one? Are they comfortable?

Thanks!

Check eBay, search for bridal hoop (or Civil War hoop), they come in all sorts of sizes for cheap ($10-$40). Get at least a 3-bone hoop, 4 or 5 is better (it acts like a Slinky and is less prone to flip up or buckle under a heavy dress). I'd recommend against making one, unless you have the material already lying around and are a very good sewer, considering how cheap they are to buy pre-made.

Hoops are very comfortable- far more so than tulle/crinolines; esp in warm weather, you get air movement around your legs and it takes a lot of weight out of the dress as compared to a crinoline/petticoats. A heavy dress will make your back sore unless you're wearing a corset. Hoops can be big, though, so definitely practice moving in it before the wedding. To sit down, grab the top hoop to collapse it a bit before sitting.

I would recommend checking with some local costume rental places. I doubt you will really want to buy a hoop skirt, and a costume place will generally be less expensive than a bridal shop would be.
I'd definately practice moving around in one before you make your final decision though. They can be very cumbersome, and difficult to sit in (not to mention when you have to use the ladies' room!). I do agree they are much lighter and cooler, but that may not be a good thing depending on where you live and what time of year you are getting married.
Good Luck!

When I bought my wedding dress, the dress consultant said they are very uncomfortable. They look great on, but are terrible when you try to dance or sit down. i would suggest you just use a very full slip skirt instead (thats what i did) You dont want to be uncomfortable at your own reception :)

If you do still want one, any bridal store can order you one if they dont have them in stock.. just make sure you order it at least 6 months before your wedding so you know you will get it on time.

Good luck!!

I had one for my wedding gown and it wasn't nearly as bad as it sounds. They are actually a lot cooler than lots of layers of tulle. I only kept mine on for the ceremony and photos and ditched it for the reception when you need more flexibility.

Most wedding dress shops will sell them (or should at least be able to tell you where to get one locally).

This is one of the wedding things that you can quite easily get on eBay (particularly as it is not something that anyone sees as it is hidden under the dress). They come in different sizings but most of them will be adjustable anyway.

I used a hoop skirt to make my dress look poofier. I think it had three hoops. It wasnt uncomfy at all, you just have to get used to the feeling of air between you and the skirt. It almost feels like your dress is up and your showing your butt. HEE HEE. I bought mine at a consignment shop for 40$. Good luck!!

Its actually uncomfortable because it's a little huge. Some bridal shops carry them so ask around. But if you cant find one, ask a seamstress to make one for you. Best Wishes:)

Most large bridal shops should sell them. They are quite comfortable, but with everything, you should try it on yourself to see how you like the feel of it.

You may have to resort to making what you need. The pattern companies like McCall's & Simplicity have Civil War & Medieval patterns. Here's a link but it looks difficult to me. Usually plastic boning is used but you could also use a thin PVC piping. Good Luck!
