I wondered "dat" too..."Da" reason must be either schools aren't teaching correctly...or people are too lazy...
(as you can tell, I don't like "dat" "da" "wuz" etc...drives me crazy...)

Many do not spell words properly because they are too busy using text message technology; therefore, they use bastardized standard abbreviations for words. Also, take a look at American education. Many of the English teachers starting in the elementary schools teach phonics. They do not teach students how to spell or to properly sound out the word. Then there are the overwhelming number of students who are too lazy to study and to be educated. They are more interested in playing video games and carousing all day on street corners and in malls. Plus, we need to put the blame on the parents, since they really do not make their kids study.

I don't think there was ever a time when English-speakers typically spelled well. (Some other languages are much easier to spell, so perhaps in those cases yes.) Shakespeare apparently spelled his own name several different ways. Jane Austen wrote a great book called Love and Freindship. My dad can only consistently spell one of my sisters' names right (and not mine--there are four of us).

You spell pretty good though don't you !! on the computer evry1 tries 2 take shortcuts so they do not have to write as much . Either that or we need to teach them better in school .
