At that price range I always recommend Specialized bikes. Whatever you get, it's going to be a compromise but always look for a quality frame. Components will wear but they are easily replaced, where as a frame should last you a good while.
Don't go for these full suspension mountain bike look-a-likes as they will fall apart as soon as you hit a mountain.
Always worth looking out for last years stuff as it's usually sold with a good discount

I know some others have list bang for the buck with brands like trek, specialized, KHS and giant but most publications say Jamis has the most bang for the buck. (nothing against any of these brands however i don't own any of them) You would really just have to compare each bike to really find out.

For brand new bikes buy Giant or Trek as they are the best bang for buck. Used you can get an even better deal. Try Craigslist.

$300? My pedals cost that much. You should wait, save a little more money, then get a better bike. You won't regret it! All $300 is going to buy you is junk.
