Thrush is the widely used term for a common fungal infection caused by Candida albicans. Thrush usually appears as vaginal (vaginal thrush) or mouth infections (oral thrush). However, on rare occasions, thrush can also affect the body more widely.

Thrush will overgrow if there is an abundant food supply. A common risk factor of thrush overgrowth is when a person has diabetes. This occurs because the thrush fungus uses the excess blood sugar as energy.

Thrush (oropharyngeal candidiasis, or OPC) is a yeast infection that develops in the mouth and throat and on the tongue.

Thrush is most common in newborns, infants, and older adults, but it can occur at any age. In healthy newborns and infants, thrush is usually not a serious problem and is easily treated and cured.

Thrush occurs when a yeast called candida grows out of control. Candida normally is present in small amounts in the mouth and on other mucous membranes. However, under certain circumstances, candida can grow rapidly, causing thrush.

Thrush can be a recurring problem for people who have chronic illnesses or who take medications that impair the body's ability to fight infection (weakened immune system). Since these people have difficulty fighting infections, the fungus that causes thrush can spread throughout the body, causing life-threatening blood or organ infections.

Thrush is an infection caused by a yeast called Candida. Small numbers of Candida commonly live on the skin and around the vaginal area. These are usually harmless. The immune system and the harmless bacteria that normally live on the skin and in the vagina usually stop Candida from thriving. However, when conditions are good for Candida, it multiplies and may invade the vagina and cause symptoms.

The conditions Candida likes best are warm, moist, airless parts of the body. This is why the vagina is the most common site for Candida infection.

it is not and i mean NOT a STI. pregnant women tend to get it more often then normal women.

Oral thrush is a yeast infection of the mucous membranes of the mouth and tongue.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Thrush is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. This organism lives in your mouth and is usually kept in check by healthy organisms that also live there. However, when your resistance to infection is low, the fungus can grow, leading to lesions in your mouth and on your tongue.

The following can lessen your resistance to infection and increase your chances of getting thrush:

* Taking antibiotics or steroid medications
* Having HIV infection or AIDS
* Receiving chemotherapy for cancer or drugs to suppress your immune system following an organ transplant
* Being very old or very young
* Being in poor health
* Having diabetes

Thrush is commonly seen in infants. It is not considered abnormal in infants unless it lasts longer than a couple of weeks.

Candida albicans can also cause yeast infections in the vagina.

Symptoms

Thrush appears as whitish, velvety plaques in the mouth and on the tongue. Underneath the whitish material, there is red tissue that may bleed. The lesions can slowly increase in number and size.

If you are immunocompromised (for example, you are HIV positive or receiving chemotherapy), the infection can spread to other organs, like the esophagus (causing pain with swallowing), or throughout your body, which can be fatal.

Oral thrush is an outbreak of the fungus Candida albicans, one of the many microbes that are usually present in small numbers in your mouth. If your natural resistance to infection is low because of an illness, or if a course of antibiotics has upset the natural balance among the microbes in your mouth, this fungus may multiply out of control. As it does so, it produces sore patches in your mouth. Sometimes it can cause similar sore areas to form in your throat as well. The patches are creamy-yellow and slightly raised. If you have the symptoms described for oral thrush, you should see your physician whithin a day or two.

A condition in which Candida albicans, a type of yeast, grows out of control in moist skin areas of the body. It is usually a result of a weakened immune system, but can be a side effect of chemotherapy or treatment with antibiotics. Thrush usually affects the mouth (oral thrush); however, rarely, it spreads throughout the entire body. Also called Candidiasis or Candidosis.

Hoof thrush is found in the underside of the hoof of horses, cattle and can affect the clefts, sole and frog. It’s not known whether thrush is caused by a bacteria or a fungus, but the condition is more likely to occur in the damp oxygen-less areas of a hoof that are often tightly packed with dirt and manure. In the early stages it is harmless, but left untreated it can cause hoof damage and lameness.
