I'll be honest with you, the Tom Clancy books are very accurate without them breaking any classified information.
Long before I entered the Marines (1996), Tom Clancy published 'Red Storm Rising', a wonderful novel basically of world war III. I remember talking to my Staff NCO's in my squadron (EA-6B Prowlers), and them telling us that a moratorium had been placed on that book, basically a gag order. For many MOS' accross the military, if you had read that book, it was deemed a breach of security to discuss it outside of your unit, because, as far as Prowlers were concerned, as well as the submarine forces, there were a number of things in this book that, while not necessarily classified, were things that were not general consumption as far a capabilities and tactics.
Not bad for an insurance salesman.

I thought he did a good job on the nuclear submarine book, but I still have no idea what they are realy able to do, just that his book pointed out some of the strategic effects and was supported by news releases and Janes. I am not a military person.

no longer fond of the Rainbow Six series, Love all of the Jack Ryan ones! although my wide-unfold is possibly the only that explains how John Clerk will become what he's (can not bear in mind what it fairly is stated as and have not the time to stroll upstairs to confirm as i'm answering this question earlier getting my son from college - he breaks up today! - yet he's possibly considered one of my wide-unfold authors!)

I wasn't a soldier, I was Air Force. I loved his books up until the Bear and the Dragon. It was painful to finish. His last one The teeth of the Tiger was getting back to his roots. I didn't read red rabbit because I learned to wait and read reviews first.

He does a very fine job taking publically available information and incorporating it into the novels.
