some people seem to be quite low on self-esteem and a life, so they look for information about other people to use as a tool to belittle others and spread rumors just to make themselves look better and to get a feeling of belonging in a group. In the long run it only hurts them because it will eventually turn around on them, because if you don't have real inner confidence, their lack of it will show and become part of the next discussion in another group.

If people can involve themselves in your business (especially problems) they can feel better about themselves (superior, helpful, or even "having more credit for having more worries") Once in a while, when children's wellbeing is at stake, they actually mean well and wish to protect children they perceive as needing protecting. Sometimes, too, people are just kind of bored and find some kind of "excitement" in being busy-bodies.

Most of the time they can't mind your business if you don't let them.

it is our society. The media pries into the lives of politicians and celebs so much, that we think we have a right to know everything about everyone. It is cool to know the latest scandal, and be the first to relate it at the water cooler at work.
People gawk at traffic wrecks so they can relate the gorey details to others.
I work in a hospital, and I am amazed at the lengths people will go to to find out the medical details of the person they are visiting, and that of other patients. One visitor dragged me down the hall to show me the hospital's copy of the Patient Bill of Rights, after I nicely refused to tell him about a patient. You should have seen the look on his face when I nicely pointed out that those were the patient's rights, not the visitors. Another favorite was a telephone call, asking about a patient. I can not give out information on the phone,so I asked her to call the family for information.. It seems she knew the family, she said they didn't like her, and did not personally know the patient, she lived down the street from her. I had to tell her repeatedly I could not give her any information. She then, cagily, asked me if she could talk to the patient, she had heard the patient couldn't talk. She was right, the patient couldn't. And she was referred again to the family.
So, people, we do not have the right to know everything, it is rude, it invades other's privacy, and may not be legal for someone to give us that information.

Because their own lives are sooooooooo full of drama, that they need to add their opinion to everyone elses lives and business. To take their minds off of the problem they're having.

Some people are nosey and arrogant enough to think they can fix everyone else's lives. They are probably not in control of their own lives and trying to feel empowered. Just tell them, "Thank you anyway. I've got this." If they don't get the hint, tell them that it's private and you'll take care of it yourself. If they still insist on giving you unsolicited advice, tell them to back off.

A women I worked with thinks she is "making polite conversation". Are your parents still together, not really polite. She also gives the excuse of so and so was just asking about you. She thinks she is a great human being and that everyone loves her. Wrong. We all think she is a nosy old witch.

Because some people don't have anything else to do but instigate into other people's problems instead of solving their own.
