Traveling makes a person more worldly and sophisticated. Meaning, they experience other cultures and ways of life. It makes them appreciate what they have or have not in comparison. Interacting with foreigners can be very knowledgable. Its a lot more enjoyable to learn about a country and its people by being there and getting it firsthand; it beats reading a history book.

Also, you can go by the tv or news media, who usually protrays a one sided picture. For example, all you see on tv news about Pakistan is poor people and housing and ugly countryside. They never show the nice beaches, beautiful mountains, etc. I never knew they had that there until I saw a website that show it. Had I gone there 20 years ago, I would have known all about it and not looked stupid when I was in a previous conversation. Or, all the Europeans rant and rave about the French Riviera (its great for them as thats about the best they have there) but it is no comparison to the casinos in the states or the beaches. So you learn a lot when you travel and see things for yourself. Its very educational.

Travelling to other countries can teach you that, despite all our cultural and ethinic differences, when it comes down to it, we are all the same. We all need food, water, shelter. We all want a better life for our families. our children.
Tolerance begins with cultural understanding, and experiencing a culture, a people first hand is a good place to start. You need an open mind and an open heart.
I always stay in hostels, which is a good way to meet young people from all over. And it's cheap.

My job has me living in places you would never dream of living but I love it. How can you understand the world or its people if you never experience it? Sure beats sitting in my trailer in Ohio waiting for the next tornado to terrorize my trailerpark :P
