I don't think a dance is appropriate for this occasion......you could have a bbq chicken dinner or even do a hamburger cookout and charge for the plates. Anything but a dance I don't think anyone will feel like dancing at a time like this . A resturant is not a good place. You still have to pay for all the dinners even at discount prices.

Is a Dance the best option? Seems to be a very sad occasion for dancing.

Have you thought about something else? Maybe a dinner at a big restaurant. Get the restautant to set a price (at a discount) and charge everyone, say, $10 more than the set price. That will also give people the chance to get up and make a speech etc.
