when you come right down to it witnesses are the trial's only input to what happened. even other evidence is presented by witnesses. the CSI that collected the fingerprint or processed the DNA has to swear in and testify to what he did or found. no witnesses, no trial.

I think the police, prosecutors etc would prefer hard evidence.
